To help new actors prepare for Summer Intensive auditions this Saturday, March 28th (sign up here), we asked our current students and actors for their best audition advice… and asked the Summer Intensives team what they look for while casting. Here’s what they said!

What’s your best audition tip?

Be prepared. - K., 4th Grade

Know the play. - A., 4th Grade

Take a deep breath. - S., 6th Grade

Don’t pace around while reading lines or singing. - C., 6th

Listen and stay focused. - B., 6th

Make big mistakes!” - A., 9th Grade

Have fun! - E., 5th Grade and T., 5th Grade

Practice hard, perform with confidence, and be kind and respectful. We watch how actors interact during auditions to help cast a team that will work well together under pressure. - The Summer Intensive Team

If someone was thinking about auditioning for a show, I would tell them… Yeah, that’s a great idea. - S., 6th Grade

It’s so fun and you can learn so many new skills! - C., 6th Grade

Go for it! - A., 9th Grade

Believe in yourself and know that you got it. - B., 6th Grade

Do your best and have a good time. - E., 5th Grade

Good luck! - T., 5th Grade

The only way to find out if the show is going to be a good fit for your skills, is to give it a try! For acting, we’re looking for confidence and character choices. Singing, we pay attention to how actors stay on pitch and their sense of rhythm. For dancing, we’re looking for basic technique like clean movements, pointed toes, and attention to detail.  - The Summer Intensive Team

Why should someone audition for a show?

It is so fun and amazing to be in. - K., 4th Grade

Because it can help with multiple things. - B., 6th Grade

Because it’s a good opportunity! - A., 9th Grade

Because I think doing theatre can help stage fright and build confidence. - C., 6th Grade

Great life experience. - S., 6th

For fun! - E., 5th Grade

For the experience. - T., 5th Grade

To level up your theatre technique! Whether this is your first show or your 17th, there is always space to grow. Each new production brings new challenges and opportunities to rise to the occasion. - The Summer Intensive Team

I learned how to _______ doing theatre:

Change emotions quickly. - C., 6th

Memorize scripts. - S., 6th Grade

Be more comfy in my skin. - A., 9th Grade

Sing and dance to the music better. - B., 6th Grade

Dance - E., 5th Grade

Mime - T., 5th Grade

We all had different answers to this question, but the throughline is that we all gained confidence, community, and a greater sense of self. Our hope that not only do the summer intensive actors learn about musical theatre, but they take home life skills they can use for the rest of their lives. - The Summer Intensive Team

My favorite part of theatre is…

Meeting new people. - C., 6th Grade

Performing with friends. - S., 6th Grade

The community. - A., 9th Grade

All the new friends I meet. - B., 6th Grade

Being with my theatre friends. - E., 5th Grade

Singing - K., 4th Grade

Collaborating with others to make something wonderful for the Bryan-College Station area. It’s a joy and an honor to teach young actors, work with our community partners, and provide arts education opportunities to our area… and we take that privilege seriously! Actors should be ready to do the same. - The Summer Intensive Team Still looking for more audition tips?
